Department of Screen and Media
The Department of Screen and Media offers Adelaide’s largest and most diverse tertiary program in the study of audiovisual media, and is one of the most respected and successful university programs in this field in Australia.
The screen media we study include film, television, and the digital technologies of the Internet and computer-based media. We offer students experiences that allow them to examine these media critically and to work in them creatively.
Across a wide range of analytical, theoretical and historical topics we examine screen media as artistic enterprises, technologies, textual systems, industrial processes and instruments of ideology. We investigate both the aesthetics and the economics of entertainment and information, and we consider contemporary media in their historical and cultural contexts.
We also offer a substantial range of production and scriptwriting opportunities in video, film, and computer-based and mobile media for short drama, documentary, games, installations and experimental works. Production practice is supported by industry mentors, master classes and workshops. Our new Bachelor of Media course and our Digital Media Studies majors provide extensive opportunities for students to gain production skills and experience in on-line environments.
The Department of Screen and Media offers topics within the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Creative Arts, the Bachelor of Media, the Master of Creative Arts and the Master Program in Natural History Filmmaking. Some students take Screen and Media topics as part of broader, more diversified degree programs, while others enrol in Screen and Media courses with a view to pursuing careers in film, television, digital games, arts administration or online industries.
Eligible postgraduate students may undertake research degrees within the Department of Screen and Media leading to a Master of Arts or a Doctor of Philosophy qualification.
