
Professor Chris Marlin is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) for Flinders University and has led research management for the University since 1998. Prior to this, he was the Head of the University's Department of Computer Science from 1992. Before coming to Flinders University, he held a range of academic positions at the University of Adelaide from 1984 to 1991, including a period as Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. From 1980 to 1983, he was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Iowa (USA).
Professor Marlin is a director of seven companies, including the University's commercialisation company Flinders Partners Pty. Ltd. He was the inaugural Chair of the Research Group for Innovative Research Universities Australia, a grouping then comprising Flinders, Griffith, La Trobe, Macquarie, Murdoch and Newcastle Universities, from 2003 to 2005. He was Chair of the national Committee of the Deputy and Pro Vice-Chancellors (Research) for Australia in 2000, and is currently a member of the Steering Committee for the Australian Access Federation. He was also a mentor in the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee/Australian Government China Shadowing Programs in 2001-2002 and 2004, and is a member of the Research Steering Committee of the International Network of Universities.
Professor Marlin has a number of roles in relation to the State of South Australia. Since 2003, he has been the inaugural Chair of the Information Economy Advisory Board, advising the Minister for Science and Information Economy in South Australia on all matters relating to information technology, including broadband infrastructure, skills and industry development. Among other State Government roles, he is the Chair of the e-Research SA Interim Board for the South Australian Government, and is the Deputy Chair of the Steering Committee for Marine Innovation South Australia. Professor Marlin was a member of the Premier's Science and Research Council from 2002 to 2005, and was reappointed to the Council in 2006.
Professor Marlin was the inaugural Chair of the Steering Committee for the South Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing from 2002 to 2006, and was the inaugural Chair of the Steering Committee for the South Australian Consortium for Information Technology and Telecommunications, an incorporated joint venture of the three South Australian universities, from 1997 to 2007.
Professor Marlin has an international reputation in software engineering research. His research interests cover various aspects of how software development in industry can be improved through the provision of better computer-based tools to help with software development. He has published extensively in programming language design, software engineering and related areas, and has consulted to a variety of academic, government and industrial organisations. Professor Marlin has also served on numerous international program committees. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the international journal Software Process - Improvement and Practice.
Professor Marlin holds Bachelor of Science (Honours) and PhD degrees in Computing Science from the University of Adelaide. He is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Companion of Engineers Australia. He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and a member of the Association for Computing Machinery and the British Computer Society.
