Accreditation of Professional Development Pathways
Modules at Flinders University
[November, 2008]
The Professional Development Pathways framework exists to connect
professional development to postgraduate university awards by the accreditation
of specific professional development modules that meet postgraduate academic
standards. The School of Education, Flinders University supports
the PD Pathways framework by enabling students who apply for entry to our
Masters of Education degree to receive credit for completed PD Pathways modules
where the minimum required assessment tasks have been successfully completed.
The following information explains how the PD Pathways framework is applied in Flinders University in relation
to the Master of Education award and the related specialisations.
Module size
Each accredited PD Pathways module is deemed to have a certain number of
PD Pathways units. Each PD Pathways unit is equivalent to 1.5 Flinders topic
unit. The Flinders University Master of Education degree has standard topic
sizes of 6 Flinders units, which are equivalent to 4 PD Pathway units. If you
wish to claim credit for PD Pathways modules at Flinders University, you need
to complete at least 4 PD Pathway Unit modules to gain credit for one topic.
If you complete 2 x 3 unit PD Pathway modules, credit of 4 PD
Pathway units (6 Flinders units = 1 topic) may be granted.
How much credit can be claimed?
Credit is approved on a case by case basis because students vary in
qualifications and experience. Also, the amount of allowable credit varies
according to the MEd specialisation. There are, however, some general rules
that you can follow. Every student has to complete 24 units of postgraduate
study at Flinders University to gain a Master of Education degree, which
includes the Master of Education specialisations. If you have a 4 year degree
or equivalent, and other significant postgraduate qualifications, you may not
receive any credit for completed PD Pathways modules, simply because your credit
allowance may be exhausted. If, on the other hand, you have a three year degree
and no other postgraduate qualifications, you could be awarded at least 12
Flinders units (2 topics) of credit.
Which modules are credited towards
which Master of Education specialisation?
Some PD Pathways modules have a high degree of relevance to specific
Master of Education specialisations. If students have a sufficient credit
allowance, the granting of credit in these cases is virtually automatic once the
PD Pathways certificate of completion is received. The table below shows which PD
Pathways modules are relevant to which Master of Education specialisation.
Please note that this does not preclude PD Pathways modules being
credited towards other specialisations. If you wanted to have credit granted
for, for example, Curriculum Leadership for the 21st Century towards
the Master of Education (Social Justice), then your case would be reviewed to
see if this is allowable under the course rules for that specialisation.
How to apply for credit?
Credit applications will be assessed once you have received an offer of admission to the course.
More information about credit transfer and how to apply for credit is available.
When you collate all of the required documents for your application for credit transfer, make sure that you also include all of your PD Pathways certificates of completion to ensure that you obtain the maximum credit allowable.
