INTRODUCTION

The Master of Science (Primary Health Care) is a 72-unit program, involving coursework and a thesis, which is offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The course articulates with

and the sequentially developed topics allow progression through the awards.

COURSE AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is designed for experienced primary health care workers seeking a higher degree in applied public health. It provides opportunities for candidates:

  • to enhance their public health knowledge, skills and understanding in ways intended to enable them better to plan, develop, manage and evaluate initiatives and programs to promote health and prevent disease;
  • to reflect critically on practice and practice skills and to relate practice to recent, relevant theories; and
  • to conceptualise, plan, conduct and report on a substantial research project on a primary health topic.

COURSE RULE

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The course is normally only available to students who hold the Graduate Diploma in Primary Health Care or who are transferring from the Master of Primary Health Care and who have completed an appropriate 36 units of coursework (for which credit will be granted).

However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

All applicants must present an acceptable research proposal and nomination for supervisor.

PROGRAM OF STUDY [November, 2006]

To qualify for the Master of Science (Primary Health Care), a student must complete 72 units with a grade of Pass, or a grade of Credit where indicated in each topic, comprising:

  • 36 units of coursework from the Graduate Diploma in Primary Health Care or the Master of Primary Health Care, including:

    - 3 topics of the Core Studies topics except the Practicum, including PHCA8917 Evaluation in Primary Health Care with a grade of Credit or better, and a credit or better in one other core topic;

    - 18 units of Research Methods topics with a grade of Credit or better:
    •   PHCA8005 Designing Questionnaires and Surveys
    •   PHCA8006 Qualitative Research Methods
    •   PHCA8007 Research in Primary Health Care

  • a 36-unit Thesis (PHCA9000).

Except with permission of the Faculty Board the program must be completed within five consecutive semesters.
