Undergraduate: Course rule and topic information
Diploma in Applied Science
(DipAppSc)
NO NEW STUDENT INTAKE
Program of study
INTRODUCTION
The Diploma in Applied Science requires two years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The course is offered by the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
Students may be eligible to transfer to the Bachelor of Science after completing Part 1 (the first year of equivalent full-time study) or after graduating. Applications to transfer may be made to SATAC in anticipation of satisfactory completion of Part 1 or graduating.
COURSE AIMS
The course provides the specialised skills and knowledge needed to work in scientific laboratories or in the field and leads to positions as laboratory assistants, laboratory technicians and quality control technicians in a variety of industry and government settings.
It is primarily designed for people who have not studied science to Year 12 level and provides access to higher education for those who have qualified for SACE and obtained 'Recorded Achievement' in at least five two-unit SACE Stage 2 subjects.
COURSE RULE
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The minimum requirements for consideration for entry to all undergraduate courses are specified in detail in the University Entry Requirements.
PROGRAM OF STUDY
[November, 2008]
To qualify for the Diploma in Applied Science, a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following requirements:
ENGL1001 Professional English (4.5 units);
at least 27 units from the First Year topics offered by the Faculty of Science and Engineering as listed below;
at least 18 units from Second or Third Year science topics; and
remaining 22.5 units can be electives taken from any area of the University.
FIRST YEAR TOPICS OFFERED BY THE FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
* Students wishing to take the Informatics stream must complete COMP1102. Students who do not wish to continue with later year computing topics may select COMP1120 Information and Communications Technology 1B instead of COMP1102.
**Students who have achieved a mark of at least 18 in SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics, or at least 6 in International Baccalaureate Mathematics HL, have the option of doing the corresponding topics MATH1141 Advanced Mathematics 1A (instead of MATH1121) and MATH1142 Advanced Mathematics 1B (instead of MATH1122).
For students who wish to pursue studies in a particular discipline area, the following streams are provided as a guide to studies that could be undertaken:
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY STREAM
STUDENTS IN THIS STREAM SHOULD CALL THE SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES PRIOR TO ENROLMENT ON (08) 8201 3505.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STREAM IN BIOLOGY
STUDENTS IN THIS STREAM SHOULD CALL THE SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES PRIOR TO ENROLMENT ON (08) 8201 3505.
