INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a graduate-entry program which requires two years of full-time study. The course is offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities, Law and Theology.

Eligible students can complete an honours degree. Enrolment in the honours program is subject to the school/department being able to provide appropriate resources and staff to supervise the program of study.


COURSE AIMS

The course aims to produce graduates who:

  • can teach within and across learning areas at secondary levels of schooling (Years 8 to 12);
  • have developed studies in depth in at least two areas relevant to teaching in secondary schools;
  • are able to apply their knowledge and skills in a range of educational settings with diverse groups of students; and
  • have the capacity to undertake ongoing professional study through a variety of pathways.

COURSE RULE

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree from the University (other than in education or teaching) or an approved qualification from another approved tertiary institution, and have studied two of the following teaching/curriculum areas: Drama, English, Visual Arts, Mathematics, Information Technology, Modern Languages (restricted to Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, German and Greek), Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences), Psychology and a variety of disciplines which fall under the heading Society and the Environment (eg history, geography, religion studies, environmental studies, Australian studies, Asian studies, legal studies, social studies), Physical Education and Health Education.

Limited credit may be granted for topics taken at the University or other institutions.

PROGRAM OF STUDY [November, 2007]

To qualify for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.

Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.

Except with the permission of the Board:

  • no compulsory topic may be taken more than twice;
  • teaching practicum topics may not be attempted more than once.

Students should note that teaching practicum topics require full-time commitment for their duration.

HONOURS DEGREE

There are two pathways to an Honours degree in Education:
  1. A full-year program consisting of 36 units of dedicated honours topics taken after the completion of the student's ordinary education degree.
  2. An alternative program for students who have completed, to a sufficiently high standard (a GPA of 5.5 or higher), the first 108 units towards their particular Bachelor of Education degree. Admission will also depend upon the School of Education being able to provide adequate resources to supervise and manage the student's proposed research project. The general requirement of the Honours program in Education is the successful completion of 36 units of honours Education topics. However, in the alternative program, students will take 18 of these units concurrently with the relevant degree program as part of their second year of study. An overload of 6 units will be required in the first semester of that year. Eligible students will enrol in a three-semester program commencing in the second year of their degree program.
