About us

New, innovative ways to prevent and control cancer are being investigated by a network of scientists and clinicians in a fully integrated research program.

The Flinders Centre for Cancer Prevention and Control (FCCPC) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence offering significant translational research opportunities across disciplines.

Much of the work is world-leading and involves international collaboration. Researchers have access to state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and clinical facilities, with a particular focus on prevention and early detection.

Our Vision

Is to reduce the impact and burden of cancer on the Australian community through excellence in cancer research and the translation of research into practice.

"By creating one of the most progressive cancer research environments in Australia, Flinders is attracting some of the brightest minds in diverse specialist fields. We have achieved critical mass as a research community and built an extensive network of national and international collaborations."

Professor Graeme Young (FCCPC, Professor of Global GI Health)

We are using the latest molecular and cellular techniques to:

  • develop improved methods for detecting pre-cancerous cells before they progress to cancer so as to aid screening

  • understand the interaction between genetic background and exposure to potential cancer-causing agents, such as chemicals and radiation

  • understand the molecular changes associated with cancer development and progression

  • develop novel cancer therapies and improving the effectiveness of cancer treatments

In addition, FCCPC members have research expertise in:

  • clinical trials

  • longitudinal clinical research, epidemiology, population studies

  • behavioural research and psycho-oncology

  • health outcomes research

and are applying these skills and methodologies to the prevention and control of bowel, oesophageal, cervical, breast, prostate and haematological cancers.

"The advantage at Flinders is that everything is under one roof. One physical environment that encourages collaboration across disciplines with real opportunities for translational research. It means our research efforts make the leap into meaningful health outcomes."

Professor David Watson (FCCPC, Professor of Surgery)

Through partnership with service providers, especially Flinders Medical Centre, and Repatriation General Hospital (RGH) the FCCPC’s research and academic activities are integrated with the clinical, translational and health system agendas. This improves translation of research into practice and maximizes the opportunities to improve patient outcomes.

The unique combination of laboratory, clinical and population health expertise, together with access to patients and high quality clinical services enables us to facilitate true multi-disciplinary research in Cancer Prevention and control.

Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer

The FCCPC is also the research arm of the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer (FCIC), an integrated cancer centre that focuses on innovative prevention strategies, clinical, biomedical and translational research and holistic patient care.

The FCIC is a joint venture between Flinders University, Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) and the FMC Foundation and will occupy a state-of-the-art building being constructed adjacent to Flinders Medical Centre. Building commenced in August 2010, with completion due late 2011.
