  • Leadership Challenge

How can students learn about a major Graduate Recruitment tool and develop their teamwork, adaptability and communication skills?? That is what? 70 students did at the Leadership Challenge.

The program was run in late October? as part of the Leadership Program for Flinders University students.

The Challenge consisted of a morning workshop on assessment centres by Danielle Jiranek, Senior Psychologist with a major recruitment agency.?

She discussed why they are used, how they work and students were given some tips on how to prepare. Students explored this further through interactive exercises.

In the afternoon students participated in a group team exercise based on an Assessment Centre activity used  in their recent recruitment campaign for BHP. The exercise has been designed to assess teamwork, results orientation, adaptability and communication.

Students were given a team exercise where they had to discuss and reach a consensus to decide on a social function for their organisation. Two groups worked on the program independently, then come together to reach a final decision. Candidates had to present these details at the completion of the exercise.

    The exercise involved
    - small group work - 15 minutes
    - large group work - 10 minutes
    - presentation preparation - 5 minutes
    - presentation to Assessors - 5 minutes per team.

Graduate Skill Project Officer Rebecca Jones said that the " program provides the participants with both a greater understanding of the tools employers use to recruit staff and gave them an opportunity  to apply the generic skills developed during their university study"

"Feedback from students once again was extremely positive with students welcoming the opportunity to further develop their skills" she said.
