  • WorkReady

WorkReady enhances students skills and range of experiences by providing work placements and employment skills. The program prepares Flinders graduates for employment by complementing your degree with real world experience. WorkReady complements our Graduate Recruitment Services and the Workplace Mentoring Program which links final year students with graduates who are already working in industry.

From the WorkReady placement I gained new experiences in a different work environment than I was used to. Meeting new people from a bigger variety of age groups than my part-time employment was interesting, but still easy to assimilate into. The actual database project was not difficult or complex, but still enabled me to work with the same principles as in any database design venture: in particular working on such a database was also interesting and challenging in its own way.

Thankyou very much for coordinating the WorkReady program, which has proved to be of value in experiencing computer science employment. It was also good to work in the area of Human Services: where people are friendly, honest and help other people. WorkReady is obviously worth the time and effort, and will be recommended by me to other students.

To participate in the program you must be an enrolled student at Flinders University. You will need to fill in an application, undertake a brief interview and attend a training session before going on placement.
When placed with an organisation, you are expected to:

    • pay your own travel costs to and from your organisation each day
    • negotiate a work schedule with the supervisor
    • arrive promptly for work and discuss in advance any necessary schedule changes with your supervisor
    • work to acquire the knowledge and abilities necessary to carry out the responsibilities outlined within stated realistic time lines
    • exhibit professional behaviour, interacting appropriately with the supervisor and other staff.

The project which I worked on for most of my placement was an online recruitment research project. They were a fantastic corporation to work for, ensuring that I benefited from my experience.

Students who participate in WorkReady are insured for public liability through Flinders University. In addition, Flinders University provides students with disability and injury cover, in case of injury during placement.

Youth Worker, Port Adelaide Central Mission
I thoroughly enjoyed working with this client group. At first I had problems with developing trust in the group however I eventually achieved this goal. It was definately challenging and at times daunting, however I enjoyed the challenge.
