products and allowing a previously unprecedented ability to control life processes.
Graduates work in:
- Agricultural, environmental, chemical, food processing, pharmaceutical
and waste management industries
- Beverage and food production
- Biotechnology, medical and agricultural industries
- Government and research establishments
- In a range of public and private diagnostic, therapeutic and research laboratories
covering microbiology, haematology, bioremediation, immunology, forensic science,
crop development, pest control, animal production, veterinary services, molecular
biology and protein engineering
- Medical and veterinary science service industries
- Process management
- Suppliers to the Biotechnology Industry

Some Occupations
RESEARCH ASSISTANT- University
Provide research analytical support for a project examining factors associated
with the absorption of environmental lead and other metals in children.
The project is funded by the Australian Research Council and will investigate
the penetration of metals from various environmental sources through the
intestinal membrane. Methods will include cell culture and analysis of
metals by potentiometric stripping voltammetry, ICP and AAS.
Essential criteria include a degree in science, environmental science,
environmental chemistry, biotechnology or a related tertiary qualification,
demonstrated abilities to perform research under limited supervision and
to meet deadlines, demonstrated ability to keep clear and concise laboratory
records, and the ability to work and communicate effectively as part of
a team.

Australian Graduate Survey
Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.
2007 Graduates at a glance:
- Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
- One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
- The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000
