Sustainable management of the natural environment depends on a sound understanding of the way that organisms have evolved, their behaviour and their interactions with other organisms and the physical environment (ecology).
Where can our graduates go?

Scientific Officer, Nature Conservation Society
Position duties include conducting research into current nature conservation issues, preparation of submissions, lobbying of relevant agencies, media work, public liaison and project development.
Requirements:
- Degree in biology, ecology, natural resource management or equivalent experience.
- Understanding of principles of ecology and nature conservation/biodiversity conservation.
- Understanding of relevant government agencies, programs and funding opportunities.
- High-level organisational and time management skills.

Australian Graduate Survey
Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.
2007 Graduates at a glance:
- Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
- One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
- The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000

Research & Conservation Assistant, Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary
The Sanctuary has a comprehensive Research and Conservation Program, involving the implementation of practical, on-ground management and strategic research designed to aid effective conservation management. We seek a committed and energetic ecologist to assist the Sanctuary Manager and Wildlife Ecologist with the Research and Conservation Program at Mornington. This includes:
- Participating in, and sometimes supervising the field research (eg. fauna and flora surveys, detailed ornithological studies).
- Supervising the field work, data collection and compilation by other assistants and volunteers.
- Assisting with data management, analysis and report preparation.
- Assisting with logistics and administration.
- Participating in the land management programs (eg. weed control, fire management, destocking).
Applicants should have a sound knowledge of wildlife and ecology (theoretical and practical), excellent ecological research skills including sampling methods, animal handling methods, data collection and management skills, basic analytical techniques and writing skills. They must work well in a team, and be willing to work in a remote location. |
