    Reserve Bank of Australia: Qualities we seek

    As well as strong technical skills we are looking for well rounded individuals who are comfortable dealing with people at all levels and have the confidence to convey their ideas. You must have a cooperative and caring approach to working with others. It is also vitally important to have a real interest in the work we do here at the Bank.

     

    One Flinders University Economics student gained a position in the Financial sector in Adelaide. Here is his advice for students on what qualities are required to work in the financial sector.

    "A broad range of qualities are required, however predominantly they revolve around identifying opportunities to create value for customers. Therefore:

    1. the ability to research and investigate on both a micro basis (eg processes) and a macro basis (eg environment and industry trends and issues).
    2. to assess and evaluate such research in order to develop innovative solutions; and
    3. to present the results in a competent and confident manner are all essential to this process.

    Other related qualities include the ability to listen; to be self motivated; the ability to manage both individuals and teams within a project environment; problem solving; decision making; negotiation/liaison and consultation skills; and organisation.

    Australian Communications Authority: Who we’re looking for

    The ACA is seeking graduates from a range of disciplines, particularly engineering and economics, with a genuine interest in communications technology and the communications industry. Graduates will also have:

    • a proven capacity to analyse information and undertake high level research;
    • sound oral and written communication skills;
    • the ability to work as part of a team; and
    • demonstrated high levels of initiative.

    Australian Graduate Survey

    Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.

    2007 Graduates at a glance:

    • Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
    • One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
    • The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000
