You’ll find a Flinders University Ecotourism Graduate working
as a Graduate Administrative Assistant for Department of Environment
and Heritage (DEH)
"After completing my Ecotourism degree I was still unsure on what
direction to take. I applied for the DEH Graduate Programme,
and continued
to look for a satisfying position while I was waiting. Eventually I was
offered a guiding position with Reef HQ, the Great Barrier Reef Marine
Park Authority's public aquarium. Moving to Townsville was one of the
best decisions I made. Working directly with the public on a
daily basis
allowed me to realise how important the environment is to many people.
Although I was in the public service I was seeing the role
the government
played from an alternative perspective as I was continually
hearing genuine
public opinions.
Gaining entry into DEH was fantastic. It not only fulfilled my original
interest to combine the environment with a professional
career, but also
given me the opportunity to work at a federal level and have a positive
effect on Australia as a whole rather than in a local or
specialised area.
At this stage I am thankful to be a part of the Graduate
Program and have
the opportunity to work and learn in a number of Divisions
before further
defining my career.
Graduate Rotations and Responsibilities
1. Natural Heritage Division / Biodiversity Policy Section
Working on Australia's second National Report to the
Convention on Biological
Diversity. This involves communicating with a number of sections within
DEH, government departments (eg. DAFF, AusAID), and State and Territory
agencies
2. Approvals & Legislation Division / Policy &
Compliance Branch
/ Referrals Section
Process referrals that are received under the EPBC Act. This includes
entering the referral into the database, sending the referral
to DEH line
areas, State and Commonwealth Ministers, and the public for
comment, and
compiling a brief to send to the minister advising whether the referral
triggers the EPBC Act.
3. Parks Australia Division/ Parks Executive and
Coordination Section
Assessing options to reduce energy usage within Parks Australia, with
the aim to contribute to positive energy savings across the Parks and
Botanic gardens managed by the Commonwealth."
