    Where can our graduates go?

    The Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) was created specifically to educate Environmental Health Officers (EHO's) to work in industry and government, in areas such as:

    • Environmental Health
    • Environmental Protection and
    • Occupational Health and Safety.

    However, many other paths are available to graduates of this broad-ranging and challenging degree, for example:

    • Research and development,
    • Training and education, and
    • Health services.

    Bachelor Environmental Health gained the position of Environmental Health Officer with the City of Port Lincoln

    I undertake inspection of premises under the Food Act 2001, Public and Environmental Health Act 1987, Local Govt. Act 1999, Supported Residential Facilities Act 1992. I also coordinate the School Immunisation Program for the City of Port Lincoln. I investigate communicable diseases outbreaks such as food poisonings. I investigate noise complaints for the EPA and approve septic tank systems for new housing projects.

    Increasingly opportunities are emerging with large food manufacturing organisations seeking applicants with the skills developed in this degree. The course is accredited by the Australian Institute of Environmental Health and the South Australian Department of Health and is recognised by other relevant Federal and State authorities. One of our greatest strengths is that virtually all of our graduates find jobs within three months.

    The Environmental Services Department requires an Env Health Officer responsible for maintaining a high standard of customer services in public and environmental health and to administer the Public and Env Health Act 1987, Food Act 1985 and other relevant legislation.

    A Bachelor of Applied Science (Env Hlth) or other qualifications for eligibility to be a member of the Australian Institutes of Environmental Health is essential.
    The successful applicant will be required to have:

    • excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • ability to apply relevant legislation and corporate policies
    • a current SA Drivers Licence

    ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICER

    This position is responsible for providing a range of efficient, effective, quality customer focused services aimed at protecting, promoting and maintaining public and environmental health and safety. This position will involve predominantly general field work ensuring legislative compliance in food related areas.
    The ideal applicant will have:

    • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Health or equivalent essential and be eligible for membership to the Australian Institute of Environmental Health.
    • Experience in the public and environmental health field.
    • Experience in food inspection (using the AFPA) system.
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
    • Experience in community consultation.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of relevant legislation and the processes and issues involved.

    Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.

    2007 Graduates at a glance:

    • Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
    • One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
    • The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000
