| "Experience shows that those who get the jobs they want are the ones
prepared to stay close to the action-even in a non-paying position. Doing
voluntary work with government or non-government organisations in the environmental
area, or taking up short-term contract work-of which there is a great deal-has
proved to be a significant way of obtaining the critical work experience
that is required as a criterion in many advertisements." (Graduate

GIS Officer, Marine Programs with the Department for Environment and Heritage
My position (GIS officer, Marine programs Branch: Coast and Marine, Directorate: Natural and Cultural Heritage, DEH) involves the use of spatial data to aid in the decision making and implementation of Marine Plans and the Marine Protected Areas pilot project. A few of my main tasks involve the production of maps displaying marine data in South Australia and the editing these data layers using ArcMap software.
The skills I learned in undertaking GIS topics within my course are vital to performing within this position, as these skills are specialised. The general course content of the Environmental Management degree has also helped me to understand the purpose of position and how decisions within Marine Programs I am involved in are made. |

Bachelor of Environmental Managemen, Extension Officer for the Southern Brown Bandicoot Recovery Program with The Nature Foundation of SA
My position at the Nature Foundation has involved lots of research for future projects, newsletters and events such as the National Forum 2002. I had to research & develop a large education display from an old diorama and then market it to South Australian Schools, with help from my supervisor. I also coordinated another project that was to run a marketing survey and write up a report from the results. I also answered phones, learnt donation programs and banking procedures and general office information.
I now am in charge of extension work for the Southern Brown Bandicoot Recovery Program involving brochures, pamphlets, media and community representatives. I need to get all the information I have out to the people that it concerns and in the process try to get people to change their ways. |

"I currently work as a Water Policy Officer in the Water Policy
Division of the Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation.
I have a number of roles within the Division:
Executive Officer, Water Resources Council
This is my main role at work and takes up around 75% of my time.
My main role with the Council is as the Departmental liaison point. I
organise their monthly meetings, including agenda papers and guest speakers,
all correspondence between the Council (usually from the Presiding Member
on behalf of members) and the Minister, budgets, sitting fees, communication
with Catchment Water Management Boards, production of reports etc.
Water Policy Officer
This role involves assisting in the development of a strategy called WaterProofing
Adelaide. It is a study into South Australia’s water resources to
identify opportunities to improve our water quality and maximise economic
development opportunities. The primary objective of the project is to
assess options that would deliver reductions in the existing water supply
sources in the metropolitan area by up to 25 per cent by 2050. …..
My other role in the Water Policy Division is to coordinate the Parliamentary
Briefing notes, which cover water resource issues that our division is
accountable for. These briefings are used by the Minister in Parliament
to answer questions about particular issues."
