    Where can our graduates go?

The course is flexible to cater for a wide range of careers yet equips graduates with transferable, generic industry skills.

Graduates from this course are working in positions ranging from Education Officer, Project Officer, Medical Records Officer, Coordinator of a Community Centre, Coordinator of a Community Program for adults with acquired brain injury, Research Assistant for a major Hospital, and Customer Services Manager for a financial Institution.

Kristy Schirmer (Health Promotion/Education) gained the position of Information Officer at the Hepatitis C Council of SA: "My position is responsible for the coordination of the information services on hepatitis C and related issues for a variety of stakeholders throughout SA. It involves the development of and management of information development, production, evaluation and distribution systems. My work involves developing, producing and distributing information on hep C to people with hep C, their family and friends, health care workers and the general community. This is through both written resources and through the management of the Hep C Info and Support Line. I need to ensure that information is current, consistent, accurate and accessible. I also oversee the Info and Support Line, Website, Library and Community Newsletter. I am also involved in awareness raising activities such as coordinating the Hepatits C Awareness Week as well having information stalls at Feast Picnic in the Park and Womadelaide. I am also responsible for managing databases which help evaluate the information program at the Hep C Council."

    Health Education and Promotion Stream
The health education and promotion stream suits people interested in working for community health groups, self-help groups and hospital-based health promotion units.

Kelly McLaren (Health Promotion) gained a Community Development Officer position with Youth Sport and Recreation. This involves: "Community Development in the areas of Youth, Recreation and Sport. Building the capacity of community groups, sporting clubs and schools towards accessing relevant programs, grants, and services. Involvement in Youth Advisory Committees and subsequent events. Working throughout the Eastern Eyre Peninsula."

Several graduates from the Health Promotion stream sought positions within the public sector with the department of Human Services. Other areas of employment were the Anti Cancer Foundation, Hepatitis C Foundation, South Australian Community Health Research Unit and Breast Screen Australia, Health Insurance Commission and an Employment Placement Agency.

    Management Stream
The management stream fills the niche between learning about business and studying medicine - the mix you need to run modern health organisations. Management students have obtained positions as administrative officers in the health industry.

    Bachelor of Nursing/BHS
These students were employed in graduate programs. To combine graduate nursing skills with health promotion knowledge, consider areas such as; the Divisions of General Practice, RDNS, Community Health and Remote Health, all levels of Government (State, Local and Federal). See also Nursing Careers Gradfacts Sheet.

    Life Sciences
The life sciences stream, which includes topics in neuroscience, biochemistry and genetics, can lead on to postgraduate studies and laboratory work.

Graduates in employment were working as research assistants in clinical trials, marketing, and with the fitness industry. Some students had gone on to Masters degrees in Audiology, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, and Allied Health. Some had enrolled in undergraduate degrees in Physiotherapy and Medical Radiation (and had applied for some status).

As a study coordinator I carry out patient contact visits, as well the preparation for these visits-- creating templates for source documentation for several studies, recording patient data in case report forms, liasing with the sponsoring company with data clarification and patient care throughout and beyond the end of the trials. Additionally because I work predominantly in Diabetes/Cardiovascular clinical research I offer Diabetes, Diet and Exercise reviews with each patient seen. (as well as general ongoing Diabetes care)."

    Disability Stream
The disability studies stream suits people interested in working in human resource management, administration and management, policy advice and community development, welfare and advocacy.

    Australian Graduate Survey

Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.

    2007 Graduates at a glance:

    • Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
    • One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
    • The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000
