Bachelor of International Business, Diploma of Language (Spanish), Graduate position in the "Retail Banking Services Personal Customer Graduate Leadership Development Program" with Commonwealth Bank Australia

The position involves one year of rotations throughout the different areas of the branch, including customer service, personal lending, assistant branch manager and branch manager. During the year there is also a component of formal training leading to a Diploma in Frontline Management. At the end of the program graduates are offered positions as Assistant Branch managers and Branch managers with the bank.

The earlier you start to develop yourself as a person ready for employment the better. This means researching companies and career options as early as possible and developing a work-in-progress CV. Don't leave it till your last year to start participating in extra-curricular activities such as work experience and involvement in clubs and associations because employers look for a demonstrated continued involvement that will transfer to the workplace. The final year is the most important though, deadlines for most graduate programs starting the next year are usually around March or April with final interviews falling in June and July.

    Australian Graduate Survey

Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.

    2007 Graduates at a glance:

    • Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
    • One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
    • The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000

International Business, majoring in Management, Business and Consumer Banking Graduate Program, Westpac

It is a 12 month program, that offers graduates 3 rotations in different departments, such as marketing, product, finance, legal, HR, and customer service. Over the course of the year, Graduates will be supervised by a manager, who will offer advice to what areas the graduate may be interested in and also any additional help. After the 12 months is up, the Graduate is then offered permanent employment within Westpac, usually in the area that the Graduate was most successful or enjoyed the most.

My advice to first and second year students would be to join the WorkReady program and get industry experience. This allows students to get a greater understanding of the industry that they are going into, and also shows future employers that they are constantly wanting to learn more and improve on university learnt skills. Even getting casual employment would show employers that you are a hard worker and can handle both university and work at the same time. Of course extra curricular activities are a bonus to have on a resume and these are looked upon well by employers. Look at attending all of the Graduate Skill Development seminars as they are a great help in developing skills and make sure to utilise all of the benefits provided by the Careers and Employer Liaison Centre as they can help you put together your CV and give you more information on interviews or applying for jobs when you need it.

For final year students, I recommend that they keep their options open and work really hard at getting all of the graduate application forms in on time.
