Bachelor Of Science, Information Associate at EDS (Electronic Data Systems)
I have been involved in several different areas within EDS. I worked on the help desk for the first 5 months and then transitioned to the Adelaide Solution Centre where I have been primarily involved in Production Support and Business Analyst work.
From my experience, extra curricular activities do give you an edge. I attended several seminars put on by the Careers and Employer Liaison Centre and found that they assist in the way that you see the outside world while at university. When you are doing a degree, lecturers tend to give specific examples. You need a broader perspective, and extra curricular activities help to give you this.
Make use of the Careers and Employer Liaison Centre and all that they offer including work experience and seminars. It may take time now but it will benefit you in the future.

Bachelor of Information Technology, gained a position in IT Development/Support
It's primarily concerned with databases - maintaining and updating a good user interface, incorporating new data, ensuring all users have access to the right things; this involves a fair amount of VB code. There is also a general "help out anyone with computer problems" component to the job, which requires a broad range of troubleshooting skills.
In your opinion, what factors enabled you to be successful in obtaining employment?
I put a lot of work into my CV. I did WorkReady work experience relating to databases. I attended professional development seminars (graduate Skills Development Sessions), emphasised good grades in core topics, applied for several positions, had done other work relating to the position - none of these could have hurt. |
