    Where can our graduates go?

    • Providing services to Australia’s non-English speaking community
    • The tourism industry (hotels, airlines, tour operators/guides, hospitality, brochure production, duty free retail, airlines, and attractions)
    • The advanced study of non-English speaking countries
    • International trade, finance and commerce
    • Export marketing, sales (large international companies, consultants)
    • Foreign language teaching (primary, secondary, university, TAFE, adult education)
    • Translating and interpreting in all of the above fields and in other areas (note that there is the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters-NAATI)

    Vacancies currently exist for the following languages French, Italian and Spanish speaking positions based in Darwin, Alice Springs and Ayers Rock.

    These permanent positions require a high level of language fluency, excellent people skills and high customer service standards.

    Defence Signals Directorate
    Linguist/Analyst

    DSD is the national signals intelligence and information security agency, responsible for collection and dissemination of foreign signals intelligence and the provision of information security support and advice.

    The Department of Defence invites applications from appropriately qualified people who wish to be considered for positions requiring proficiency in one or more of the languages commonly used in countries regional to Australia. Successful applicants will possess a university major, an Armed Forces qualification, NAATI registration, or applicable experience using the language/s. Applicants should also have extensive experience in translating and transcribing, a good appreciation of regional and international events, good oral and written communication skills, good keyboard skills, and personal attributes allowing them to work under pressure with minimal supervision as members of a team. Applicants should note that they will be required to undergo practical skills evaluation as part of the selection procedure.

    The Federal Government has announced important changes to Australia's welfare and employment services - "Australians Working Together - helping people to move forward". The Centrelink Personal Adviser role is integral to this initiative and we are seeking enthusiastic, committed, customer-focused people for this new service.

    As a Personal Adviser you work with individual Centrelink customers, providing them with in-depth advice by:

    • Engaging and building rapport
    • Identifying concerns and needs
    • Monitoring progress
    • Ensuring clarity of understanding
    • Developing action plans
    • Motivating and encouraging economic and/or social participation

    A mature communicator, you will have proven customer service experience, with a demonstrated ability to work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds. With exceptional communication and planning skills, you will blend empathy, sensitivity and understanding to develop innovative and effective solutions. You will need to utilise Windows and Internet based applications in this role. The ability to quickly develop an in-depth understanding of Centrelink's products and services and liaise with community networks is a primary function. Driver's licence preferred.

    Australian Graduate Survey

    Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full- or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.

    2007 Graduates at a glance:

    • Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
    • One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
    • The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000
