    Where can our graduates go?

Graduate employment statistics show that a law degree is one of the best passports to employment in a wide range of occupations because the skills acquired are highly valued. Not all lawyers become barristers or solicitors. Many are employed by large firms or by government or private-sector organisations to assist with the complexities of modern business. Others move into areas such as policy development, administration or law reform.

Katherine Lorenz was awarded a LLB (Hons) and gained a position as an Articled Clerk at Mallesons Stephen Jaques. "I am articled to a partner in a law firm. My duties generally include legal research, preparing court documents, drafting advice to clients, drafting contracts, commercial advisory work. After 12 months as an articled clerk, I will be admitted as a solicitor and Barrister of the Supreme Court."

You'll find our graduates filling full time positions in the SA Police Department, Services SA, the Australian Taxation Office, ETSA, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the Attorney General's Department, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Crown Solicitors Office, Federal Court of Australia, Women’s Legal Service, Baker Young Stockbrokers Ltd, the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement, ACT Chief Minister's Department, Bowden Brompton Community Legal Service, Flinders Technologies Pty Ltd, - as well, of course, at law firms such as Piper Alderman, Lynch Meyer Lawyers, Mallesons Stephen Jaques, Hunt and Hunt and Fisher Jeffries. And one of our Law graduates won a prestigious internship program offered by the Australian Mission to the United Nations.

Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice, Associate to a Justice of the Supreme Court – this involves:

Working closely with a Justice of the Supreme Court in, and out, of court. Some administrative work, file management, research and assisting with court proceedings. … Think about where you REALLY want to work and go for it.

In addition to Summer Clerkships, Flinders University Law students have undertaken diverse opportunities whilst studying. One student joined World Youth International in Kathmandu, Nepal, and was placed with the Rural Reconstruction Network. Another undertook a six-week placement with Amnesty International's National Refugee Team in Sydney.

Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Arts, Graduate Officer, Cabinet Office, ACT Chief Minister's Department

The first 10 months involves completing three rotations with different agencies within the ACT public service; providing an overview of different departments. The final rotation is with my host agency, the Cabinet Office. … I think employers respond to candidates who have relevant work experience, whether it be voluntary or paid.
