Where can our graduates go?
This course prepares students for a career in the chemical industry and will
provide graduates to meet the high demand for chemically trained professionals
in the growing number of biotechnology companies.
For example:
- Pharmaceutical companies
- Biotechnology companies
- Hospital laboratories and government laboratories both within Australia
and overseas.
- Wine, petrochemical, polymer (including tyre manufacture and plastic manufacture)
and paint industries
- Intellectual Property Management
- Analytical laboratories.
Students are also able to move on to higher degree studies leading to employment
in academic, research or government institutions, or to develop their own businesses.
Some Occupations
Organic Chemist / s – PhD & BSc Hons
- Growing Fine Chemicals Manufacturer & Researcher

As a result of continued growth, they are currently looking for Organic
Chemists at varying experience /educational levels.
As an Organic Chemist, you will be involved in the development of a range
of organic compounds such as reagents, building blocks and advanced intermediates.
Some projects will involve the synthesis of biologically active target
molecules.
To be successful in this role you will possess either a PhD or BSc Hons.
Experience in medicinal chemistry or organometallic chemistry would be
well regarded. You will have the ability to work as part of a focused
professional team yet have the capability to use initiative and to work
individually. You will be organised and be motivated to meet the needs
of internal and external customers. |
Examples of Position Titles:

Medicinal Chemistry Opportunities
A producer of maker of leading brand pharmaceuticals and fast moving
consumer goods has two opportunities to join their skilled analytical
and research team.
Here you will enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory with GC-MS, LC-MS,
NMR, FTIR and an extensive range of pilot equipment. Problem solving through
experimental outlines, scale-up experimentation and process commissioning
form part of the responsibilities.
Ideally, you have a background in the development area of a chemical factory
and experience of process/synthetic scale-up. Creativity, enthusiasm for
solving complex problems, excellent planning skills and a good team focus
will see you thrive.
SYNTHETIC CHEMIST
This role offers great variety, from experimental work and synthesis of
value-added intermediates/standards, to maximising process productivity
and developing new site manufacturing procedures. An understanding of
plant scale synthesis, structure elucidation and opiate/medicinal chemistry
would be a plus.
Post-doctoral experience in synthetic chemistry and the ability to operate
a NMR is an essential requirement; and experience in opiate chemistry
would also be advantageous.
DEVELOPMENT CHEMIST
This is an ideal starting point for your chemistry career. In this role
you will implement and report experimental work and process troubleshooting.
You will also maximise process productivity and develop new site manufacturing
procedures. Exposure to liquid-liquid extraction optimisation and design
will put you in good stead.
A Chemistry degree is essential, and Honours is preferred.

Australian Graduate Survey
Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.
2007 Graduates at a glance:
- Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
- One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
- The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000
