Where can our graduates go?
Contemporary nurses need to be able to practise in areas of health promotion,
maintenance and education, as well as in the prevention of illness, the amelioration
of injury, disease, disability and the restoration of health.
Nursing Careers
Graduates are eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of South Australia
as a Registered General Nurse. The program also is recognised interstate. New
graduates usually are employed in an acute care hospital setting and many go
on to specialise in other areas such as mental health, midwifery, paediatrics
and palliative care.
Personal Requirements:
- good communication skills
- able to assume responsibility and a leadership role
- able to take the initiative in emergencies
- tolerance, patience and tact in dealing with people from a wide range
of backgrounds and cultures able to work as part of a team
- mentally and physically fit

Where?
A wide variety of professional nursing roles are available nationally and internationally.
Some of the more exotic locales could be a movie set, a mine, the outback, a
plane, or even a ski resort or cruise liner!
A nursing career could encompass: community health centres, aged care centres,
community nursing services, local councils, industry, rural and remote settings,
schools, tourism, international aid, scientific research, home health services,
rehabilitation and extended care, drug and alcohol services, family and child
health, public and environmental health and child-care. Nurses may also practice
in the defence force, the travel industry, occupational health and safety, and
in health care teams in developing countries.

Students were employed in graduate nursing programs. To combine graduate nursing
skills with health promotion knowledge, consider areas such as; the Divisions
of General Practice, RDNS, Community Health and Remote Health at State and Local
Government.
Health Promotion Stream
Several graduates from the Health Promotion stream sought positions within the
public sector with the Department of Human Services. Other areas of employment
were the Anti Cancer Foundation, Hepatitis C Foundation, South Australian Community
Health Research Unit and Breast Screen Australia and the Health Insurance Commission.
Australian Graduate Survey
Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.
2007 Graduates at a glance:
- Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
- One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
- The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000
