    Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, Community Nutritionist/Dietitian

    This position allows me to experience a wide range of nutrition-related activities, including both community nutrition and clinical dietetic work. I am based in a rural NT town of about 10,000 people and service the local population plus remote Aboriginal communities, up to 6 hours drive away. My main activities include: providing nutrition education to communities and groups; supporting local and NT-wide nutrition initiatives; participating in relevant data collection tasks; advocating for improvements in foods available in remote communities; providing and developing nutrition resources; providing an clinical service to the local hospital and an outpatient clinic. These tasks involved working in a collaborative, multi-sectoral environment.

    Graduates find employment in a variety of settings including:

    • Nutrition and health education in community health centres;
    • Public health nutrition;
    • Food and nutrition policy;

    Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dietitian, National University Hospital, Singapore

    I am currently in a permanent position in the Dietetics Department. I specialise in Paediatrics Dietetics, seeing children and babies either as inpatients or outpatients. I do a lot of diet and nutrition counselling, nutrition and dietary assessment with both the patient and the main carers. I also look after general adults in the wards, who have medical problems ranging from heart bypass, diabetes, renal diseases, gastrointestinal problems, overweight to geriatric patients with malnutrition and poor wound healing. Patients with swallowing problems and on tube feeding are also assessed.

    Besides seeing patients in the hospital, I am also involved in community nutrition work, assessing the nutritional status of patients in the nursing homes, as well as doing up healthy menus for them. I also provide health talks to school and corporate organisations.

    CSIRO Health Sciences and Nutrition
    Research Projects Officer

    CSIRO Health Sciences and Nutrition undertakes specialised scientific research and works closely with food and pharmaceutical industries in both applied and strategic research programs. It has laboratories in Adelaide and Melbourne.

    A position exists for a Research Projects Officer in Adelaide. The contract will be for a three year term. The appointee will be expected to provide research support for the Consumer Science Program. The program investigates sensory, cognitive and attitudinal determinants of food choice and undertakes population based surveys as well as qualitative and quantitative experimental trials with human subjects.

    Essential requirements: Graduate qualifications in Psychology or nutrition or related biological or behavioural science or equivalent experience in an academic or industrial setting of relevance to the position.

    Graduate Careers Australia's (GCA) annual Australian Graduate Survey ( AGS ) is a study of the activities of new higher education graduates around four months after the completion of their qualifications. New graduates are surveyed regarding their major activities, including full-time study, full or part-time employment, seeking employment or their unavailability for work or study.

    2007 Graduates at a glance:

    • Of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2007; 95 per cent were employed within four months of completing their degrees
    • One-fifth of respondents (20.0 per cent), were undertaking further full-time study after completing their bachelor qualifications
    • The typical (median) annual starting salary for new Australian resident bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia was $43,000
