  • Graduate Profile: Archaeology

    Name: Ashley Matic
Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Archaeology (Hons) MA
    Position: Archaeologist
    Commencement Date: April 2006

Could you give us a description of what your current position involves?

I primarily conduct cultural heritage assessments for private and public organisations looking to undertake developments, to highlight the historical and Aboriginal archaeological issues of an area prior to development occurring. We work with developers, Aboriginal communities and government agencies to determine the best approach to managing the cultural heritage of an area that may be affected by a proposed development

With your experiences in securing employment what advice would you give to students?

Basically get out there and volunteer, get your name known around the place and show initiative. There's plenty of work around in Archaeology in the eastern states for people who have the skills and desire to make it their career. Volunteering while at university is a great way to get your name known about the place, and to develop field skills that are essential.

How did you go about finding graduate employment? How has your career progressed from here?

I sent out a lot of CVs to archaeological consulting companies, and spoke to people who I knew in the industry. Once I landed my first short term contract the work continued as I heard about other short jobs and some longer term positions, which has culminated with my current position.

Briefly describe the application and interview processes you have been through?

Some of them have been quite short, others have been two hour marathons. However they all seem to be after the same things, which are people who have the skills they require (and are willing to learn more to further those skills), can work well with others, and are enthusiastic about what they do.

Do you have any further helpful hints for students/graduates?

Be patient, demonstrate that you're interested, and work hard- It may take time but it will pay off.
