Graduate Profile - Bachelor of Psychology (Honours)
Name: Jade Keightley
Degree Studying: Bachelor of Psychology (Honours)
Position Gained: Assistant Psychologist
Employer: Dept of Corrections, specifically Northfield Women’s
Prison
Commencement Date: 21/05/03
Could you give us a brief description of what your position involves?
The Senior Psychologist that I work with at Northfield is employed
by Aboriginal Services to give counselling to the Aboriginal men
and women at Yatalla and Northfield, as she is my supervisor most
of my work is also with them. I also work in conjunction with the
Social Worker and Family Management Director who are involved in
sessions with the rest of the women.
Have the skills you developed at university been an important
part of your job?
To a certain extent, things that I have learnt (ie, counselling
techniques and theories) have been important for my position at
the prison, but the hands on experience that I am gaining from being
exposed to such a full on situation have gone a long way in preparing
me for future employment. I think because the situation that I am
in (a prison) also makes things different from any other placement
that a Psychology student would do.
At what stage during your studies did you begin to think about
employment choices and options?
The degree that I am doing offers a third year placement scheme
that has been an integral part of the degree for many years. It
is a full year subject requiring students to do 3 x 60hr placements
at different psychological settings in and around Adelaide. I suppose
for me, the time came when I had to start thinking about my employment
choices then.
What advice would you give to students who are in their first,
second, and final year of study?
Try and get as much placement and work experience as you can during
your degree. There is no substitute for experience, and unfortunately
even with your degree someone with more experience would be a better
candidate. All psychologists that I have been exposed to require
that 'hands on' experience, and also by doing the volunteer work
you are showing that you are dedicated to the area of study.
How did you go about finding employment?
I was lucky enough to actually be approached with this position.
This is definitely the area of study that I am interested in and
getting this placement has only increased this interest.
Do you have any helpful hints for students?
Remember to have a good balance of study and everything else. You
will do well if you enjoy what you do.
