of Justice and Society A Sociology background provides access
to employment in a wide range of occupations. The value of a sociological
perspective and sociologically-based research skills is increasingly
being recognised by employers. Employment is particularly likely
in the policy and service areas of health care, welfare services,
law and legal services, housing, community services, and education.
These fields of study develop specifically-related skills and knowledge,
which provide links to a wide range of particular employment opportunities.
They also enhance "generalist" job- related skills-such
as skills in research, information processing, analysis, evaluation,
organisation, oral and written communication, and contextual knowledge
of Australia and the world which are vital and flexible assets in
today's dynamic job market.
Amy Marshall, Bachelor of Arts (Honours Sociology) commenced
working as a contract Research Assistant for the Office of
Crime Statistics and Research
I collect data from police and court files and perform simple
quantitative analysis on the data. I also write literature
reviews and executive summaries of data and help conduct interviews.
I liaise closely with other OCSAR staff, police and court
personnel.….. the methodologies learned at uni are used
everyday in both collecting data and performing statistical
analysis. More importantly, my approach to work-learning as
much as possible, collecting the data the right way and ensuring
information produced is informative, valid and reliable-stems
directly from principles instilled whilst at uni.
