My Flinders Experience

NICKI BIERMANN
Flinders midwifery graduate and midwife, Goulburn Valley Health (Victoria)

“I’m passionate about supporting women and families during their child-bearing years. There is a very deep responsibility and there is a satisfaction knowing that you – along with the team needed to provide a safe birth – are caring for two lives.

To be a part of a birth is both an honour and a privilege. Over the years I was practising as a doula – a personal attendant to women in labour.

I had an inquiring mind, so I wanted to become a professional in the area of midwifery. At the time I was living in Sydney and I decided to come to Flinders University. The academic profiles of the associate professors really appealed to me and also the cost of living in Adelaide was much better.

I had studied at other universities but my Flinders degree was above and beyond anything I had studied before. A lot of my peer group found it quite a personal journey to become a midwife, and access to the academic staff as mentors was invaluable. Beyond the clinical knowledge, the support they gave me to grow into my role as a midwife was priceless.”
