Sharing information with the palliative care community

Flinders Centre for Clinical Change and Health Care Research (FCCCHCR) researchers David Currow and Jennifer Tieman are the Chief Investigators on the CareSearch palliative care knowledge network project.

The CareSearch palliative care knowledge network has been designed to provide the health community and the general public with up to date information and links to quality resources in palliative care including materials produced specifically for patients, carers and GPs.  These resources reflect the significant role that primary care and family caregivers have in caring for people at the end of life.

The project recognises that when a person has a life limiting illness the need for reliable and easily accessible information becomes even more important, and information about care may be multidisciplinary in nature.  As a consequence, the online resource is being developed  and continually added to so that it:

  • brings together the relevant information and resources from contributing disciplines
  • links members of a community, whether clinicians or consumers, in innovative ways to improve outcomes
  • provides mechanisms and tools to assist in the development and use of evidence.

The project is a work in progress that reflects the changing nature of palliative care needs and practice and the underlying evidence and literature base that supports clinical care and service delivery.

Key outcomes

  • the project commenced in July 2006
  • initial funds came from the Australian Government's National Palliative Care Program
