Areas of study

The arts

Flinders has a strong tradition in English and literature, and teaches both the performing and visual arts at the highest level. It is home to an internationally recognised Drama Centre, and the Centre for Research in the New Literatures in English. The English Department also teaches professional English and communication skills.

Undergraduate options

All of these areas can be studied to Honours level.

Creative Arts: The Bachelor of Creative Arts is a unique course for students who want to fill creative roles in theatre, film, television, or digital media industries, as writers, researchers, editors, actors, directors or producers. There are three streams - Creative Writing, Drama or Screen.

A major sequence in Drama is offered within a Bachelor of Arts covering film, theatre and television. Drama Performance (covering management, direction and other crafts, as well as acting), is offered within the Bachelor of Creative Arts.

Literature/writing: A major sequence in English within a Bachelor of Arts fosters knowledge and enthusiasm for literature and creative writing, and offers a broad range of options for literary specialisation. A Creative Writing stream is offered in the Bachelor of Creative Arts.

A comprehensive major sequence in Screen Studies within the Bachelor of Arts develops students' skills as both critical viewers and producers of screen media. A Screen Production stream is offered within the Bachelor of Creative Arts.

Visual arts: A unique joint program allows students to complete a Bachelor of Arts at Flinders and a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the Adelaide Central School of Arts in just five years.

Postgraduate options

The Master of Creative Arts offers professional studies in Creative writing, Drama and Screen Production.

English students can complete a Master of Arts program by thesis.
