The environment

Flinders offers a comprehensive environmental program which allows students to gain specialised qualifications to suit specific needs and a range of career options.

It incorporates nine undergraduate courses, and the opportunity to include environmental topics in three other undergraduate degrees, and three postgraduate programs.

Undergraduate options

Applied Geographical Information Systems: A degree offering comprehensive training in GIS, reinforced with necessary skills in remote sensing, statistics and computing, as well as the opportunity to study a major sequence in the area most relevant to the student's future career.

All of the following degrees can be studied at Honours level (Honours is compulsory in Biotechnology).

Biodiversity and Conservation: A specialist degree which will train graduates to work in areas related to the conservation and management of biological resources.

Biotechnology: Offered as an Honours degree program, Biotechnology combines biology with medicine and looks at the value of living organisms and their products for economic, social or health uses. Can also be studied in a combined degrees program with a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice.

Ecotourism: A degree program which prepares graduates to work as guides, tour operators, planners and managers in one of the fasting growing sectors of the tourism industry.

Environmental Health: An interesting and challenging degree with opportunities for honours and higher degree study, which prepares graduates for careers as environmental health professionals, mostly in local and state governments.

Environmental Management: A comprehensive degree course which analyses how our environmental systems work, how humans affect them and how our impact can be minimised.

Environmental Science: A degree program which focuses on the underlying science which underpins environmental monitoring, assessment and improvement.

Environmental Studies: A major sequence within a Bachelor of Arts which looks at the history of mankind's involvement with the environment, including the ethical and philosophical issues.

In addition, Environmental Biology can be studied as a Third Year stream within the Bachelor of Science and environmental topics can be taken as electives within a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice.

The Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science both can be studied as combined degrees programs with a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice.

Postgraduate options

Biotechnology/Biotechnology Studies: Postgraduate programs in biotechnology are designed to develop advanced scientific, entrepreneurial and research skills.

Environmental Management: A postgraduate program is offered to students with a background in environmental studies, environmental science, geography, public policy and related areas, or with work responsibilities in the field of environmental management.
