These are courses for anyone interested in the practice of history in applied or everyday contexts. The emphasis is very much on carrying out history-related work across a range of historical disciplines. Options from which students may choose include community history, family history, archaeology, museum studies and heritage studies. Both the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma undertake to introduce and develop applied skills in these areas.

The courses are open to - but by no means restricted to - practitioners in government or in other public or private institutions. One component of the courses, Practical Genealogy for Family Historians, is available as a stand-alone topic conducted as a series of workshops. Students who successfully complete this topic will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE - COURSE OVERVIEW
The curriculum of the Graduate Certificate offers a wide range of choice so that students will be able to pursue their own particular interests and learning needs. To complete the course successfully, students will need to pass at least 12 units from the following 6-unit topics:

  • History in Theory and Practice
  • Heritage and Community History
  • Practical Genealogy for Family Historians
  • Museums and Audiences
  • New Ways in Social History

Where necessary students may choose one of the following 6-unit topics to complete the 18 units required for the Graduate Certificate:

  • Historical Archaeology of Australia
  • Cultural Heritage Management
  • Australian Maritime Archaeology
  • Underwater and Coastal Archaeology
  • Historical Archaeological Field School
  • Cultural Tourism: Approaches and Issues
  • Settling in Australia: the Italian, Greek and French Experience
  • Writing and Designing for the Web (6 units)
  • Cultural Heritage and the Law
  • Essentials of Interpretation

GRADUATE DIPLOMA - COURSE OVERVIEW
The Graduate Diploma is made up of 36 units of the following which must include at least 12 units from the following 6-unit topics:

  • History in Theory and Practice (formerly New Ways in Social History)
  • Heritage and Community History
  • Practical Genealogy for Family Historians
  • New Ways in Social History
  • Museums and Audiences

Also the Graduate Diploma must include the following 12-unit topic History Guided Study
and no more than 12 units from the following 6-unit topics:

  • Historical Archaeology of Australia
  • Cultural Heritage Management
  • Australian Maritime Archaeology
  • Coastal and Underwater Archaeology
  • Historical Archaeological Field School
  • Cultural Tourism: Approaches and Issues
  • Settling in Australia: the Italian, Greek and French Experience
  • Writing and Designing for the Web
  • Cultural Heritage and the Law
  • Essentials of Interpretation
  • Interpretation Processes and Planning

Entry requirements
Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution. The Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness of candidature, and may take into account relevant work experience.

  2. Link via the GradStart button. Click on 'Want to Apply?' to begin your application.
  3. Submit your application. You will be sent a confirmation email.
You can apply for admission at any time during the year and GradStart applications are free.

If you receive any correspondence from SATAC requesting further information you will need to supply what is requested. Your application cannot be processed until all requested information is received. Note: you must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia to apply through GradStart.
