This comprehensive program draws on theories and material from demography, geography, sociology and economics and stresses the interdisciplinary nature of population studies, the inter-relationships between population, development, planning, population sustainability, poverty reduction, reproductive health and women's empowerment.
It emphasises teaching and research in the areas of migration, regional development, urbanisation, labour force, ageing, mortality and health, population and the environment, fertility and family planning, and population policies.
The first three qualifications are offered as articulated courses. The Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are coursework degrees while the Masters degree involves coursework and research.
The separate Master of Arts program provides students with the training needed to carry out advanced, independent research on population and related issues. It can be taken by coursework and thesis or by thesis only, and can be taken in appropriate cases, as part of a PhD qualifying program.
