Overview

This is an innovative professional doctorate program combining coursework and research. Internationally, the EdD is increasingly the qualification of choice for professionals in the field of education.

It is particularly suited to mid-career employees who already hold a masters degree and who wish to pursue doctoral studies where the principal orientation is on:

  • the development of new knowledge through research; and
  • the application of knowledge in professional practice.

The Doctor of Education has three components:

Part A: 36 units of master level coursework (credit may be granted for previous studies).

Part B: 36 units of doctoral studies in research, dissertation preparation and colloquim.

Part C: 36 units of research projects either as: one 36-unit dissertation, or two 18-unit research projects which are cognate in terms of research focus.

The core outcome of the course is that graduates make a sustained and original contribution to knowledge in policy, management and practice. The emphasis is on leadership through knowledge expertise. Students participate in the program through collaboration in knowledge analysis and generation.

The course aims to provide:

  • advanced specialist study for experienced professionals;
  • a structured sequence of studies that offers an advanced basis for teaching in compulsory and post-compulsory education, or professionals in practice;
  • a program of study and research that is appropriate for people in leadership positions in the professions generally;
  • skills and knowledge so that graduates will be able to assume senior leadership roles in their organisations and advise on education policy at a sectorial and government level; and
  • research training and the completion of supervised research projects so that graduates will be able to make sustained contributions to knowledge through research.

Credit may be given for existing masters level awards (up to a total of 36 units). The consequence is that for most students with a masters degree, the program is the equivalent of two years of full-time study.
