Graduate Certificate in Education: International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program

This one-year, 18-unit postgraduate course, which is offered as part-time, online study is intended for:

  • teachers in IB World Schools offering or planning to offer the IBMYP
  • teachers wishing to work in IBMYP schools internationally or in their home country
  • teachers aspiring to leadership in curriculum design, pedagogy and collaborative practice in IBMYP schools
  • teachers seeking enhanced professional satisfaction gained from deeper understanding of IBMYP philosophy, principles and practices.

Participants successful in this graduate certificate will gain:

  • deep understanding of the philosophy, origins and current requirements of the IBMYP
  • insight into the articulation of IB programs
  • increased skill in concept-based curriculum planning
  • understanding of the relationship between the demands of national
  • curricula and the IBMYP curriculum framework
  • enhanced skills of reflection and practitioner enquiry
  • enhanced capacity to lead collaborative planning and reflective professional practice
  • the opportunity to register for the IB Certificate of Teaching and Learning.

Master of Education Degree (International Baccalaureate IB, all programs)

The Master of Education (IB) is a fee-paying course designed for experienced IB teachers, coordinators and leaders in IB schools, or educators in IB schools aspiring to such positions. The key aim of this course is for participants to critically engage with relevant literature and their own practice with regard to international education and the IB, with a strong focus on practice-based education inquiry.

The 1st two core topics are delivered on campus at Flinders University and in Singapore. Students will need to select the location that suits them best. The final core topic is offered in distance mode only. The balance of elective topics can be undertaken either internally at Flinders University or in distance mode.  

Participants in the course will be supported to:

  • acquire an understanding of the educational theories that underpin international education and investigate issues of relevance to international education and IB practice
  • examine key elements of research  processes used in undertaking practice-based research in IB schools
  • identify practice-based areas of inquiry, with reference to international education, the IB and relevant literature
  • apply an appropriate research method to a systematic and rigorous research project/dissertation in IB practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution. 

In addition, applicants to the Masters degree must be currently employed in an IB school.

Masters degrees are 72-unit courses but credit of up to 36 units may be granted for an approved 4 year degree and relevant work experience. Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate or equivalent receive some credit when progressing to Education Masters program.
