There is a national shortage of qualified Environmental Health Officers (EHOs). At the same time, many graduates with science and health science degrees are unable to find suitable employment. This course aims to match up those people with a course which will (in just 12 months) provide them with a professional qualification, which has significant career opportunities in local and state government and private industry.

It has been designed to fit the requirements for Australian Institute for Environmental Health (AIEH) accreditation, thus a graduate could gain employment anywhere in Australia or in overseas countries which recognise AIEH approved qualifications.

The course also aims to make students conversant in the many disciplines that make up environmental health and aware of the importance of the integration of these disciplines in achieving effective solutions and also to encourage students to promote an understanding within the community of environmental health and the role of their profession and to be committed to ongoing lifelong learning.

Course structure

The course will be composed of the following 6-unit topics:

  • Social Determinants of Health and Well-being
  • Sustainable Development - Public Health Issues
  • Environmental Health Principles and Frameworks
  • Management of Food Safety and Communicable Disease
  • Legislation Relevant to Environmental Health
  • Environmental Health Policy, Management and Administration

The full program of study, admission requirements and topic descriptions are set out in the course rule for this degree.
