This articulated, multi-disciplinary program was developed to address the professional needs of graduates involved with policy, planning or service delivery for older people.

Seven key perspectives feature through the degrees: healthy, positive ageing; life-course framework for understanding ageing; multidisciplinary approach; multicultural awareness and a global viewpoint; lifelong learning and e-learning for improving professional practice; research, evaluation and evidence-based planning and service delivery; and ethical decision-making.

Students must have proficiency in basic computer and Internet skills and access to a recently produced PC with a modem capable of at least 56kbs.

Flinders University also offers a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters in Palliative Care in Aged Care.

The Graduate Certificate comprises six core topics. Graduate Diploma students then take a further 18 units of elective topics.

The core topics are:

  • Introduction to Social Gerontology
  • Principles of Clinical Gerontology
  • Psychological Dimensions of Ageing
  • Multidisciplinary Gerontological Assessment
  • Research and Evaluation in Ageing Studies
  • Demography and Epidemiology of Ageing

Elective topics include Mental Health and the Older Person; Administration and Management of Aged Care Services; Exercise for an Ageing Population; Medication and Ageing.
This program will allow students to have the option of undertaking the 54-unit Masters from the following streams: Masters by Coursework; Masters by Project [with 18 units of project]; and Masters by Research [with 36-unit thesis].

Entry requirements
Applicants must hold an approved undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in a related field. The equivalent of one year full-time work in ageing is also required for the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma and at least two years full-time work for the Masters. Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (or other qualifications deemed equivalent) receive credit when progressing to the Graduate Diploma or Masters.

  3. Submit your application. You will be sent a confirmation email.
You can apply for admission at any time during the year and GradStart applications are free.

If you receive any correspondence from SATAC requesting further information you will need to supply what is requested. Your application cannot be processed until all requested information is received. Note: you must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia to apply through GradStart.

Course fees
Refer to the appropriate fee schedule for Australian students and international students.

Australian citizens, and those holding an Australian permanent humanitarian visa who meet eligibility criteria, are eligible to defer their fees through the Higher Education Loan Program (FEE-HELP). Contact Student Finance Services on (08) 8201 3143 for details.
