The Graduate Certificates cater for professionals from any background working in health-related areas who wish to deepen the knowledge base on which their practice is grounded. It introduces core competencies in management, better equipping students to carry out management tasks or to proceed to further graduate-level coursework.

The Master of Health Administration develops the skills of middle-level managers, equipping them to move to more senior positions. Students learn from a combination of applying theory to management problems, using management tools and techniques and critical reflection on their own practice as managers.

The Master of Science (Health Administration) focuses specifically on the skills middle-level managers need to advance research in their area, and includes the opportunity to undertake thesis research on an issue of importance to their industry.

Course structures

The programs are progressive, with many topic options in common, thus allowing students to move to higher level study and receive credit for work already completed.

The other three programs are for graduates in fields such as medicine, nursing and science who are experienced managers of clinical or other health services.

Most domestic students are part-time and take one topic each semester. At this pace, the certificate courses take 18 months, the diploma 3 years and the Masters degree 4.5 years. Faster progression is possible but means a heavier workload.

Students choose from the following list of Core and Elective topics

Core foundation topics for all the awards are:

  • Managing People and Organisations in Health and Aged Care
  • Health Care Financial Management

Core topics for the Graduate Diploma award:

  • Health Services Law
  • Health Systems and Health Policy

Core topics for the Masters award:

  • Strategic Management in Health
  • Major Project in Health Management (compulsory Masters topic)

Electives

  • Risk Management and Clinical Governance
  • Managing Communications and Partnerships
  • Health Economics and Resource Allocation
