Flinders University offers a coursework postgraduate program that brings together the knowledge, expertise and teaching abilities of two of the University's prime disciplines - Law and International Relations.
The Master of Laws (International Law and International Relations) draws upon the synergies present in the School of Law and the School of Political and International Studies. The degree naturally crosses disciplinary boundaries and explores some of the most topical themes present in Australia and the world.
The 72-unit degree is equivalent to one year of full-time coursework study, as successful applicants will be granted 36 units of credit in recognition of their prior obtained qualifications, eg four-year degree (honours equivalent), or a three-year degree (or equivalent), together with appropriate professional experience.
The course is delivered on an intensive basis. Topics comprise the equivalent full-time contact hours but are delivered over an intense 2-3 day period during each semester. This is outlined in the 2008 teaching schedule.
COURSE AIMS
The course aims to meet the educational needs of graduates with an interest in law and international relations, in particular:
- to highlight, in an increasingly globalised 21st century world, the significance of international law as a means of regulating matters affecting the relations between and among nation states and, increasingly, within nation states;
- to explore the significant connections between international law and the structure and operation of major institutions in society, with an emphasis on issues arising in a global context; and
- to provide a deep understanding of the legal rules that operate within selected specified fields that fall with the broad conception of international law, especially as it concerns security, business, transnational threats, and human rights.
