Overview

The Department of Archaeology at Flinders University has taught maritime archaeology at undergraduate level since 1996 and at postgraduate level since 2002 as well as providing supervision for MA (by research and thesis) and PhD students.

The Graduate Program in Maritime Archaeology (GPMA) was established in 2002 and is now the largest, most successful and currently the only active program of its kind in Australia. The program has two academic staff, one adjunct staff, and a part-time technical officer as well as two PhD students (on scholarships) who work part-time in the program.

The Graduate Program has drawn students from eight different countries (Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Japan) and graduates are now working for underwater cultural heritage management agencies, museums, consultancy companies and universities, both in Australia and overseas.

Topics offered in the Graduate Program including Maritime Archaeology in Australia, Global Perspectives in Maritime and Underwater Archaeology, Issues in Maritime Archaeology, Maritime Archaeological Field School, Coastal and Underwater Archaeology, Ships: Research, Recording and Reconstruction and Underwater Cultural Heritage: Legislation, Management and Interpretation.

Study modes

Students can choose to study on-campus in Adelaide where both full-time and part-time studies are available or can study externally (currently only available part-time). External studies are available through a combination of distance learning (CD ROM and printed readers) and online (E-learning) topics, some of which are jointly offered by Flinders University and the University of Ulster (Northern Ireland). This flexibility means that students can study in their own time while still living and working at home.

The program also offers additional topics in "intensive" mode where students can complete the lecture, seminar and workshop components of a topic over a short period (six to nine days) and submit assessments after they have returned home. One requirement is that all students must complete a two-week intensive maritime archaeology field school.
