All medical students are registered with the Medical Board of Australia, which has responsibility for ensuring that all persons permitted to practise medicine in Australia should be fit and proper persons to maintain professional standards.
New registration rules after graduation mean that International students graduating from Australian medical schools who are from countries other than a short list which includes Canada, USA and UK, must be able to demonstrate English language skills at IELTS academic level 7 in each component of the test, to qualify for registration. The test results must be obtained within the two years prior to applying for registration (other than as a student).
The same English language requirements apply to Australian (or New Zealand) students after graduation, if their secondary education was not in English in the "exempted" countries (Australia, NZ, Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa).
