Overview

The Advanced Continence Nurse Specialist stream will facilitate extended practice skills and knowledge essential for the expanded advanced role of the continence nurse.

The stream consists of three topics that together will provide an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology of incontinence that is considered fundamental to continence nursing practice at an advanced level. Theory an practice are linked for elements such as pharmacology, assessment of client stresses and coping mechanisms, critical thinking, evidence-based practice, practice outcome measurement and legal implications of practice.

The stream will assist the student to develop advanced continence nursing practice, and develop and utilise evidence-based nursing research skills to plan, implement and evaluate care provisions in a specialist nursing research skills to plan, implement and evaluate care provisions in a specialist nursing environment.

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and the Master of Nursing must:

  1. hold a nursing degree or equivalent qualification
  2. be registered nurses
  3. hold a current practising certificate
  4. have a minimum of two years' post-registration experience as a continence nurse advisor
  5. have successfully completed a post-basic continence course, and
  6. provide a completed and signed 'Clinical Support' form as evidence their employer is willing to facilitate the extended clinical practice components of the course.

However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.
