Overview

The Correctional Nursing stream aims to provide the student with an opportunity to explore the specialist nursing area of correctional nursing. In addition to foundation topics providing the student with an understanding of the correctional system in which health care is delivered, the course adopts a primary health care approach to identifying the health care needs of prison populations across the life span and strategies for improvement and promotion of health related matters of those incarcerated.

Students will explore the historical and contemporary perspectives of prison systems, populations and the development of health delivery structures in a secure environment. Specific population issues include forensic psychiatric nursing, health issues for men and women in secure environments, health care needs of indigenous prisoners, drug use and detoxification, and aging in prison. Skill and practice areas will include interpersonal skills and effective communication in time restricted environments, interviewing, assessment and discharge planning practices and the legal, ethical and professional dimensions of correctional nursing.

The stream will provide nurses working in correctional services and those who wish to, with the opportunity to critically analyse the conflicts of care versus custodial philosophies and to research the potential for change in this area of practice. Flexibility within the topics allows students to focus on a particular focus of their interest or practice in this field.
