Overview

Streams 

The following nursing/specialist streams can be completed as part of the nursing courses listed above: 

Graduate Certificate in Health

This is an 18-unit course which allows qualified registered nurses to undertake postgraduate studies in specialty areas. Students complete a specialty stream chosen from those listed above.

Graduate Diploma in Nursing

This is a 36-unit course which aims to give students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in one of a selected range of practice-based streams and to extend their general theoretical knowledge. Students are required to complete 18 units of core topics and 18 units of a chosen specialty stream from those listed above.

This course also offers a Coursework stream where students are required to complete 18 units of core topics and 18 units from selected topics offered by the various specialty streams listed above, enabling students to design a stream based on their interests rather than a specific practice area.

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Health (Palliative Care) stream may be granted credit towards the Graduate Diploma in Nursing and the Master of Nursing.

Master of Nursing

This is a 54-unit course for registered nurses who wish to prepare themselves for leadership roles in nursing practice, research and consultancy.

The course offers five pathways directed towards coursework, clinical or research, or a combination of these areas.

  • Pathways 1-3 comprise 18 units of core topics as those offered by the Graduate Diploma of Nursing, and:
    • Pathway 1: Coursework. Students must also complete a 9-unit Practice Project and elective topics to the value of 27 units.
    • Pathway 2: Coursework and Clinical. Students must also complete a 9-unit Practice Project, an 18-unit specialty stream and elective topics to the value of 9 units.
    • Pathway 3: Clinical. Students must also complete two specialty streams to the value of 18 units each from those listed above.
  • Pathways 4 and 5 comprise of 18 units of research based core topics and:
    • Pathway 4: Coursework and Research. Students must also complete a research project to the value of 18 units and elective topics to the value of 18 units.
    • Pathway 5: Clinical and Research. Students must also complete a research project to the value of 18 units and a specialty stream from those listed above to the value of 18 units.

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma must:

  1. hold a nursing or midwifery degree or equivalent qualification, and
  2. be registered general nurses, and
  3. hold a current practising certificate.

Some streams also require a minimum amount of post-registration experience. Information is available from stream details listed above.

Applicants for the Master of Nursing must meet the above requirements and have a minimum of two years’ post-registration experience.

Candidates for pathways 4 or 5 of the Master of Nursing must also provide with their application a brief statement detailing a proposed research area for the research project component.

However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.
