Overview

The Cardiac Care specialisation aims to develop advanced theoretical knowledge and specialist skills that are essential for the registered nurse to expertly assess and manage patients admitted to hospital with cardiac conditions.

It focuses on the development of specialised skills to care for adults with acute cardiovascular conditions, in addition to skills for primary, secondary and tertiary preventative cardiovascular nursing.

Students will also develop the ability to recognise and resuscitate the acute and/or critically ill deteriorating patient in acute healthcare settings. Theoretical concepts and nursing skills will be linked to current international and national standards for cardiac nursing practice.

Students will be:

  • expected to synthesise and apply the best available evidence in conjunction with clinical expertise and consumer preferences in order to plan, implement and evaluate cardiac nursing care.
  • required to complete a minimum of 80 hours of professional experience placement (clinical practice).

What will I study?

Refer to the course rule:

Entry requirements

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma must:

  1. hold an approved degree or equivalent qualifications, and
  2. be registered nurses
  3. have a minimum of 1 year post-registration experience (6 months of which must be in a relevant clinical area), and
  4. provide a completed and signed Professional Experience Placement (PEP) Support form (DOCX) as evidence that their employer is willing to facilitate the extended clinical practice components of the course within their workplace and/or an affiliated health agency will facilitate the clinical practice in a supernumerary capacity.

Applicants for the Master of Nursing must also meet the above requirements.

However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Additional requirements

Students:

  • must make a self-declaration as to their fitness to practice and advise of any pre-existing illness or disability that may impair their ability to practice
  • will be required to undergo a police check before their clinical placements

Immunisation and communicable diseases: requirements for clinical placements

This course includes clinical placements which aim to provide students with the practical experience required for the workplace. Students on placement have both an increased risk of most vaccine preventable diseases as well as the potential to transmit infections to susceptible patients. Students who are required to complete clinical placements as part of their course must therefore be immunised in accordance with the relevant State or Territory immunisation  standards (e.g. Health Immunisation for Health Care Workers in South Australia 2014 Policy Guideline)  and any additional private provider requirements as needed.

Further information about immunisation and other clinical placement requirements.
