Overview

Flinders offers a comprehensive program that allows students from a range of backgrounds to complete higher degree studies in sociology, social services and allied areas.

The Graduate Diploma aims to provide students who have limited previous sociological experience with:

  • a solid introduction to sociological ways of thinking;
  • a grounding in social theory necessary for further study;
  • a grounding in social research methods necessary for further study.

The Master of Arts (Sociology) aims to provide students with:

  • advanced training in sociological theory and methods and in substantive areas of sociology;
  • training in conducting or developing their own research in sociology.

Applicants for the graduate diploma must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution.

However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for admission.

Applicants for the masters program must normally either: hold an approved honours degree of at least second class standard in a relevant social science; or hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification and the Graduate Diploma in Sociology; or have completed an equivalent course of studies approved by the Faculty Board.
