The Graduate Certificate in Aged Care Administration is an 18-unit program offered by the College of Medicine and Public Health. It is not offered for full-time study.

The Graduate Certificate in Aged Care Administration articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Health Administration and/or Master of Health Administration programs and credit will normally be given for related topics completed in the graduate certificate.

If the core and option topic requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Aged Care Administration have been satisfied, it is available as an exit award from the Graduate Diploma in Health Administration, Master of Health Administration and the Master of Science (Health Administration).

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution and have not less than two years professional experience in the health or aged care sector following completion of the degree or equivalent qualification.

However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature. Credit may be granted for comparable prior studies.

Credit

Credit may be granted towards completion of the degree for comparable prior studies.

Course aims

The Graduate Certificate is designed to provide students who are working in health and aged care, whatever their professional background, with the opportunity to acquire deeper knowledge and enhanced skills in aged care management.

The course builds on the students' current workplace experience and promotes the application of management theories to existing problems. This strong industry focus is aimed at delivering direct benefits to students through knowledge and to aged care workplaces through its application.

The Graduate Certificate will introduce students to some core competencies, successful completion of which will better equip them to carry out management tasks and allow them to proceed if they wish, to further graduate level coursework.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, graduates are expected to be able to:

  • apply knowledge of management methods to their practice in managing people and resources
  • appreciate the policy and system dynamics driving change in the aged care sector
  • enhance their career potential and capacity for life-long learning.

Program of study

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Aged Care Administration, a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study.

Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.

Core - Year 1 topics

 AGES8020  Introduction to Social Gerontology  (4.5 units)
 HACM9100  Leadership in Health and Aged Care  (4.5 units)

Select one of:

 HACM9102  Financial Management and Economics in Health and Aged Care  (4.5 units)
 HACM9103  Financial Management in Aged Care  (4.5 units)

Plus one of the following option topics (or with the approval of the course coordinator, another appropriate 4.5-unit graduate-level topic):

Option - Year 1 topics

 AGES8022  Psychological Dimensions of Ageing  (4.5 units)
 HACM9101  Leading Organisations in Health and Aged Care  (4.5 units)

The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.

Except with permission of the Faculty Board the program must be completed within four consecutive semesters.
