BUSINESS MAJORS

  • Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurs are people who identify and exploit new business opportunities. As such they play a fundamental role in both economic growth and in the growth of society more broadly. This major focuses on developing the skills and knowledge necessary to become a successful entrepreneur. Topics considered range from the identification of business opportunities and developing creativity, to all practical aspects of developing and implementing a business plan, to successfully realising a new business venture. The study of entrepreneurship is relevant no matter whether your aim is to establish your own business venture or to build a career in a major corporation, since entrepreneurial skills are equally important for the long term survival and growth of large organisations. There are few more exciting, challenging, or rewarding careers than being a successful entrepreneur.

  • Business Economics
This major focuses on teaching you the core concepts and principles of economics relevant to the business world, an understanding of which is often vital to business success. By studying this major you will develop an understanding of the economic environment in which businesses operate, as well as develop skills and knowledge that will enable you to be a more effective manager. An understanding of economic principles and concepts is an essential ingredient in business decisions across areas as diverse as finance, marketing and strategic management. This major includes introductions to both microeconomics and macroeconomics, and allows students to develop more specialist knowledge in areas such as international trade and business forecasting.

  • International Business
Operating on an international basis is now the norm for major corporations. It is also becoming the norm for many medium and small businesses across many industry sectors - reflecting factors such as the rapid pace of globalisation and the increasing prevalence of the internet. Operating successfully in international markets requires specialised skills and knowledge as there are many additional challenges that come with operating internationally. This includes challenges in areas such as strategic management, finance, human resource management, and marketing, reflecting differences in culture, customs, institutional arrangements and governance, to name but a few. Through studying this major students will gain skills and knowledge that will equip them to successfully pursue careers in an international business setting.

  • Human Resource Management
Human Resource Management (HRM) is about effectively managing people within organisations to ensure their activities are consistent with achieving the aims and objectives of the organisation. This is a challenging task. Effective HRM requires knowledge of organisational behaviour, legal issues relating to employees (and to Company Directors), organisational structure theory, motivational theory, and a myriad of other factors that relate to the recruitment, motivation, and management of employees. Effective HRM plays a key role in realising the strategic objectives of organisations.

  • Marketing
Marketing is one of the core activities of all firms. The marketing function is concerned with all aspects of planning and selling a firm's product, from identifying the "needs" of potential customers, to product design, to all aspects of its sale, including promotion, pricing, and where and when to sell. Students taking the marketing major at Flinders will study the concepts and principles relating to all these aspects of marketing. In addition, the strategic role of marketing within organisations and the international facets of marketing are also primary foci of this major. Studies in marketing can lead to many exciting, challenging and highly rewarding careers, including in advertising, market research, specialist marketing management, and general management.

SECOND MAJOR
One of the benefits of studying the Flinders Bachelor of Business is that you can select your second major from a range of complementary areas of study available at the University, including Commercial Law, Computer Studies, Globalisation, International Relations, Legal Studies, Public Policy or the wide range of language studies offered by Flinders. Other major sequences, as listed under the Bachelor of Arts, may also be available but approval must be sought from the Director of Studies.
