The Bachelor of Arts is the most popular degree at Flinders University and at most universities around the world. It provides a high quality education suitable for today's society, featuring both depth of study and breadth of knowledge.
The BA's flexibility allows you to either:
- explore in depth a single field of study (up to two-thirds of your topics may be concentrated in a chosen field); or
- range widely and study several different fields of study (the BA allows you to graduate with one, two or three majors).
BA graduates have the potential to become managers and leaders in the rapidly changing workforce of the 21st century.
WHAT SKILLS WILL I DEVELOP?
The BA produces flexible, literate, independent and well-informed graduates, equipped with the transferable skills highly valued in the workforce. These include: communication and presentation skills (oral, written, electronic, graphic); skills in independent research and critical analysis; teamwork and interpersonal skills (including an understanding of cultural diversity); management and planning skills (including time and self-management skills); intellectual and creative skills; and computer literacy.
All these abilities are highly regarded by both private and public sector employers. BA graduates, say employers 'think further ahead' and have 'a great general awareness of current issues, developed through flexible thinking'. Employers praise the 'open minded thinking that comes with a quality BA degree'.
You also can study a BA in a joint program with the:
- Advanced Diploma/Bachelor of Visual Arts offered by Adelaide Central School of Art (five years full-time or the equivalent);
- TAFE Advanced Diploma of Business (Marketing), Diploma of Business Administration, Advanced Diploma of Accounting, Advanced Diploma of Business (Human Resources), or Advanced Diploma of Business Management (four years full-time or the equivalent).
WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?
When you graduate, you will be ready to join the workforce as a manager and leader with valuable, marketable attributes.
While many Arts graduates choose a career that uses the knowledge-based content of their degree, others capitalise on strong generic skills founded on a sound theoretical knowledge base. These open up employment in a range of government organisations and private corporations. For example, a BA graduate may enter the Commonwealth or State public service through a graduate program or join a private corporation to follow a path such as project management, public policy development, administration, human resource management, marketing and records management.
Other Arts graduates create their own opportunities. Selecting an employment sector such as tourism or insurance, they work for an initial period at an entry level position in order to gain basic knowledge of that field. With hard work, and using the skills acquired at university, Arts graduates are then ideally equipped to move forward into management positions within the sector.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
There are 42 fields of study available to you in the BA. Major areas of study can also be taken as a minor sequence. See: Major
Sequences and Specialisations listing.
You will be required to study one of these subject areas for three years, completing a major sequence.
You must also study another subject area for at least two years, completing a minor sequence. You may then use the remaining half of your degree to study your major in more depth, to convert your minor to a second major, to construct a third major, or to explore topics from across the university.
The full program of study, including links to major sequences and combined degrees programs are set out in the Course rule, and also links to topic descriptions for this degree.
