WHY STUDY COMPUTER SCIENCE?

This course is designed primarily for non-computing graduates who need computing skills as part of their job or who want to pursue a new career in computing (possibly in an area related to their current area of expertise). However, it also is suitable for computing graduates who need to renew or upgrade their skills and knowledge.

This course provides professional knowledge and skills development equivalent to an undergraduate degree majoring in computer science and has the highest level of accreditation from the Australian Computing Society.

An important aim is to prepare graduates for life-long learning because, in a rapidly changing environment, they will need the ability to quickly learn new programming languages and approaches to software development. There is also an emphasis on developing professional skills such as information literacy, group work, communication and interpersonal skills.

WHAT JOBS WILL I GET? This course is specifically designed to provide graduates with comprehensive and portable skills that will be of value in any form of employment that involves some contact with computers and networks and requires a high level of literacy in electronic information.

To find out more about the jobs this degree can lead to, go to the Your Career section of our graduate careers website.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

No prior computing experience is required to start the course, but at later levels there is significant scientific and technical depth in such areas as software engineering, databases, artificial intelligence, hypermedia and programming languages.

The program involves five core topics plus electives selected from Second and Third Years options. Status is given for suitable topics already completed and some topics offered by other universities can be included through cross enrolment.

In their final year, students can participate in a range of group projects or complete an individual project under the guidance of a supervisor.

The full program of study is set out in the Course rule and topic descriptions for this degree.
