WHY STUDY EDUCATION AT FLINDERS?

Flinders aims to educate teachers who appreciate the complex nature of a teacher's work and practice in ways that promote a socially just, democratic and ecologically sustainable world. All our courses emphasise that a teacher's work involves combinations of the following attributes: high levels of knowledge; values; skills; personal dispositions; sensitivities and capabilities.

The BEd(ECh)/BA double degree program is an initial teacher education program that prepares students from diverse backgrounds to combine a broad liberal education with preparation for professional roles in the field of early childhood education.

This innovative course aims to support education students to become effective practitioners in teaching children from birth to eight years of age in a range of community settings. This involves understanding the complex nature of teachers' work, and acquiring knowledge about young children, their families, community services that provide for their care and education, and the curriculum and pedagogy of early childhood education.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to offer to students the knowledge and skills associated with a sound liberal education and that meets employers' needs. It provides the opportunity to undertake a range of areas allowing both depth of study and breadth of knowledge. The BA produces flexible, literate, independent and well-informed graduates, equipped with the transferable skills highly valued in the workplace (see BA).

The staff of the School of Education acknowledge their roles in working with students, colleagues and the wider community. We see the following activities in social commentary, teaching and research as integrated, with each activity informing and complementing the others.

Our teaching role is to provide degrees in Education that are inspirational, promote an enthusiasm for learning, equip teachers with professional expertise, and develop life-long learners. We exemplify best educational practice to our students and to the rest of the University.

Our research role is to generate, advance and promulgate knowledge that will inform the scholarly community, our industry partners and society. Our research encompasses a variety of methods, subjects and audiences, providing information, understanding and critique.

In our social role we advocate for cultural beliefs and public policies in which education is a means of achieving social justice. We challenge presumptions and practices which limit individuals' potentials. We endeavour to construct a School culture that encourages, promotes and celebrates:

  • reflection and inquiry
  • academic freedom and integrity
  • collegiality, collaboration and respect for individuals
  • diversity and social justice.

WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?

The degree prepares graduates to work in services providing for the education and care of children from birth to eight years of age. Early childhood education is a priority of both state and federal governments. Potential employers include: childcare centres, kindergartens/preschools, junior primary schools, and other associated settings.

Graduates will be provided with an academic qualification which will enable them to apply for registration to the Teachers' Registration Board in South Australia, interstate and some overseas countries (exact requirements may vary). Graduates of a BA can apply for positions in a range of government and industry settings.
